Rabbi Gordon frequently mentions the Cherokee when discussing contrasting tribal affiliations (as in this episode of Chumash with Rashi starting at 30:15). Among the Cherokee, tribal affiliation did not follow the father -- and being a Cherokee did not follow the father, either. If your mother was Cherokee, you were (and perhaps still are, I don't know how it works today) considered to be 100% Cherokee, and a full member of your mother's tribe. Reply

Wonderful lesson, R. Gordon, thank you.
Questions: in previous parsha, Rashi on verse 25:5 writes that each of 88,000 dayanim (judges) executed 2 Israelim for sin of Peor. That equals 176,000.
1 That happened BEFORE or AFTER Pinhas executed Zimri and Kozbi?
2. If that happened before action of Pinhas, what started first: plage or action of dayanim?
Just want to understand what happened better. Reply
