Rabbi New I enjoy your lessons...I was privileged to grow up in the Melbourne Jewish community to come close to Chabad in my high school years, and to be a guest in your parents' home where they received everyone graciously!:) Thank you for continuing the special Melbourne Chabad flavor! Reply

Rabbi New

Your lesson was not only head knowledge, or heart knowledge, but it is soul knowledge!

Thank you for your insightful question. The answer is that the Torah does not prohibit fermented produce per se, but rather the fermentation of 5 specific grains: wheat, barley, oats, spelt and rye - each of which is used to make into bread. The basic reason is that we are to re-experience the Exodus where it was the Israelites dough that did not have sufficient time to rise/ferment. Reply

Halachah Respectfully Rabbi,

Wine is fermented with a raising agent, therefore, how is drinking wine acceptable within the law? Or was the wine to be new wine, which is not alcohol and not fermented, but a refreshing drink? Reply

This class analyzes an aspect of the weekly Torah portion or upcoming holiday. While providing a basic understanding of the subject matter, the lesson delves into its deeper and more complex dimensions with emphasis on the spiritual relevance to our daily lives. Inspiration for both the novice and advanced student.
