Thank you for your insightful question. The answer is that the Torah does not prohibit fermented produce per se, but rather the fermentation of 5 specific grains: wheat, barley, oats, spelt and rye - each of which is used to make into bread. The basic reason is that we are to re-experience the Exodus where it was the Israelites dough that did not have sufficient time to rise/ferment. Reply

Halachah Respectfully Rabbi,

Wine is fermented with a raising agent, therefore, how is drinking wine acceptable within the law? Or was the wine to be new wine, which is not alcohol and not fermented, but a refreshing drink? Reply
