from what i know from my hungarian jewish mom in budapest it was not so extensively utilized around and before the II world war ,as it should have been.perhaps only those got saved who integrated the mezuzah into their every day life. maybe for the same reason the Rebbe had to launch an extensive campaigne to re-vitalize it 40 years ago.also, if the mezuzos were not kosher (INVALID) would have provided no protection. Mezuzah- a question If, as you stated, the Mezuzah offers physical protection, why did it not offer this protection to the observant victims of the holocaust?
