The simple child expresses amazement and wonder.
He hears how the people to whom he belongs were locked into a situation that was hopeless by all natural means, and the Master of the Universe Himself turned heaven and earth upside down to pull them out of there.
So awestruck is the simple child by this story, the only words that come forth are, “What is this?”
As the wise child is the opposite of the wicked child, so the simple child is the opposite of the child who doesn’t know to ask.
If a child hears this story and has no questions, something vital is missing.
What is missing? The precious simplicity of the simple child.
Second Seder, 1965.
