It's not a symbol. It really happened. Kabbalists at a high level do all kinds of stuff. Ari HaKadosh could see neshamot reincarnated into mineral, plant, animals, and even give a history of the neshama in a person (previous gilgulim). Reply

There is a statue of the Golem at the entranceway to the Jewish neighborhood in Prague. There are many stories about the attic in the Great Synagogue in Prague where the Golem still lies. Nobody is allowed up there and all the guides have something to say about it. Stories are well known in those parts. Fascinating stuff. Reply
